MEET AN EMPLOYER…
Tell us a bit about where you work and what you do…
Rathbone is a UK-wide voluntary youth sector organisation providing opportunities for young people to transform their life-circumstances by re-engaging with learning, discovering their ability to succeed and achieving progression to further education, training and employment.
At Rathbone in Derby, we help young people to learn in a way that suits them. We’re in the city centre at St Peter’s Church Yard. We’re about 15 minutes walk from the train station, and five minutes walk from the local bus station and the Westfield Centre. See http://www.rathboneuk.org/location.aspx?ID=67
What do you enjoy most about your job?
Working with young people to enable them to unpack their skills to succeed in education, life skills and work. I enjoy developing new innovative and engaging curriculum programmes to support the city’s labour needs, to positively progress young people into apprenticeships, further education or employment. I enjoy the community links the centre has with St Peters Church, SPACE@Connexions, SOVA, St Peters Quarters (BID) and actively encouraging young people to engage with local businesses.I enjoy the journey young people have, from their starting point to their end outcome and beyond.
What are the biggest challenges you face in the current social/economic climate?
Persuading employers to invest in young people, and take them on to an apprenticeship or paid work.
How can Derby City Centre Chaplaincy help your project and its employees and make a difference in the city centre?
It engages with young people who have many barriers to learning, such as home life, confidence, financial difficulty, low self esteem. It enhances our pastoral support and guidance for all young people and supports the business through networking, collaborative working in developing ‘real life’ active and engaging projects for young people and Rathbone staff to take part in – taking learning into the community. And it inputs into our curriculum to develop awareness to young people around Diversity and Culture.
