What do you enjoy most about your job?

One of the most enjoyable things about the job is the versatility, hard work and efficiency that our customers require. Its also one of the least enjoyable things at times as it can make the job quite demanding. Personally I spend a lot of my time on site measuring, planning and quoting but also enjoy the diversity of the customers that step through our door.

What are the biggest challenges you face in the current social/economic climate?

The challenges of the past few years have been particularly harsh. The recession has been unrelenting and we have had to rely on our own increased efficiency and fight for orders at reduced profit margins. People often remark that we are busy but are not aware that this is because we are working much harder ourselves, for smaller rewards, on tasks for which we would otherwise employ others.

How can Derby City Centre chaplaincy help your business and its employees and make a difference in the city centre?

Retail is completely unpredictable and sometimes dealing with the public can be a relentless task. The idea of a coffee or lunch break is a distant memory. It must be years, for example, since I last sat in the shop and ate a couple of sandwiches and  enjoyed a  cup of tea without interruption. Running a business is extremely stressful and its good to know that there is, near at hand, people who understand and will help when needed. The City is very lucky to have such an asset as the Chaplaincy available to its businesses.
